Jian Zhan (建盏) is a type of Chinese ceramics that mainly produce teacups and teaware, and it was the most prevalent teaware during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The crafting technique originated from Jianyang, a region located in the northern Fujian province, and the technique is listed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. This special handmade teacup is also well-known in Japan as Tenmoku.

Jian Zhan is recognised by its dark iron body and unique glaze patterns. All material used for making Jian Zhan is completely natural. The glaze liquid is made from plant ash, and the clay is locally mined from its place of origin Jianyang. Because both the glaze and the clay in Jianyang contain high iron content, after being fired by 1350℃ high heat over hours or even days, this natural combination composes a variety of colours and shapes of patterns.

Why do tea-lovers enjoy tea with Jian Zhan?
